About Sarah, Plain and Tall
“A warming, delicately tuned story.”
– Kirkus Reviews
Released in 1985, “Sarah, Plain and Tall” is a children’s novel authored by Patricia MacLachlan. This narrative centers around Anna, a young girl residing on the prairie with her brother Caleb and their father, who has been a widower for an extended duration. When their father advertises for a wife, Sarah, a compassionate and capable woman hailing from Maine, responds to the advertisement and takes up residence with the family.
As Sarah integrates herself into the household, Anna and Caleb undergo a transformation, learning to cherish and welcome her presence. Sarah, in turn, guides them in coming to grips with the loss of their mother and in finding happiness in their day-to-day existence. Nevertheless, when a harsh winter jeopardizes Sarah’s continued presence, the family must unite to devise a way to ensure she remains with them.
“Sarah, Plain and Tall” emerges as a heartwarming and exquisitely crafted chronicle of family dynamics, coping with loss, and the compelling influence of love in uniting individuals. The novel received the Newbery Medal in 1986, an acknowledgment of its status as one of the finest works of children’s literature from that year.
