About Number the Stars

“a story about the escape of the Jews from Denmark in 1943.”

– Kirkus Reviews

“Number the Stars,” authored by Lois Lowry and released in 1989, is a historical fiction novel written for young adults. This literary work revolves around the life of Annemarie Johansen, a young Danish girl residing in Nazi-occupied Denmark during the throes of World War II.

As the war rages unabated, Annemarie and her family grapple with the perils and constrictions imposed by living under Nazi dominion, which encompasses the constant specter of being sent to concentration camps. When the Nazis compel Annemarie’s dearest companion, Ellen Rosen, to go into concealment as an escape from their clutches, Annemarie and her family assume the perilous task of facilitating Ellen and her family’s escape from Denmark to the sanctuary of Sweden.

As they embark on a treacherous odyssey through the countryside, Annemarie and her family put their own lives on the line to safeguard Ellen and her kin, unearthing the profound significance of valor, unwavering loyalty, and the imperative of championing what is morally just.

“Number the Stars” emerges as a moving and contemplative narrative of comradeship, courage, and the enduring resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The novel clinched the Newbery Medal in 1990, a distinction that acknowledges it as one of the finest works of children’s literature for that year.
