About Elijah of Buxton
“…many readers will finish and say, ‘This is one of the best books I have ever read.'”
– Kirkus Reviews
Elijah of Buxton is the story of Elijah Freeman from Buxton Canada, a refugee camp for African-American slaves who journeyed the Underground Railroad to Canada seeking freedom from slavery. Elijah was not a slave himself, but learns the how precious freedom is, and the unimaginable horrors of the life his parents fled, when he enters the United States in pursuit of a fellow refugee and disreputable “reverend,” who stoled money from one of his friends. Elijah was always known as a rather fragile boy, but his journey to the US may change his life, and reputation, entirely.
Elijah of Buxton has won numerous awards including:
- Winner, TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award, 2008
