About Blood on the River
“…Lively historical fiction at its best.”
– Kirkus Reviews
Blood on the River is the multi-award winning story of a twelve-year-old street thief from London named Samuel Collier who escapes the gallows, becomes Captain John Smith’s personal page, and ventures off to the New World aboard the Susan Constant expecting to find a paradise of shores filled with gold and easy living. Instead, he finds that the New World was not what he expected. The journey on the high-seas is difficult, diplomacy with the natives is complex, and gold and silver are nowhere to be found. Yet, amidst the struggle to survive, Samuel learns the language of the Algonquin nation and many important lessons from Captain Smith and his other companions. In time Samuel begins to realize that he can reinvent himself and chart his own course in the New World. Blood on the River explores themes of adventure, loyalty, friendship, cooperation, and personal development.
